Marrickville is located in the south western suburbs of Sydney; it is situated 7 km south west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales Australia. Marrickville is located in the Marrickville state electorate and has a population of 23,161 people. The suburbs surrounding Marrickville are: Petersham, Stanmore, Dulwich Hill, Enmore, Newtown, St Peters, Sydenham, Tempe and Earlwood.
Located on the northern banks of the popular Cooks River, the Marrickville area was originally inhabited by the Cadigal Indigenous group who lived in the area for over 7000 years prior to white settlement. After European settlement the area was officially named by Thomas Chalder who grew up in the English village of Marrick in North Yorkshire. The ‘ville’ was officially added to the name in 1861.
In more recent years Marrickville has seen significant growth and with an influx of young professionals, musicians and artists, is commonly referred to as ‘the new Paddington’ or ‘the new Newtown’. Marrickville has a vibrant artistic community and is the primary site for the famous Sydney Fringe Festival.
