Arncliffe is located in the southern suburbs of Sydney; it is situated 11 km south of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales Australia. Arncliffe is located in the Rockdale state electorate and has a population of 8,420 people. The suburbs surrounding Arncliffe are: Bardwell Park, Turrella, Wolli Creek, Bardwell Valley, Sydney Airport, Bexley, Banksia and Kyeemagh.
The Arncliffe area was originally inhabited by the indigenous people of the Cadigal, Bidjigal and Gweagal clans. After European settlement the area became known as ‘Cobbler’s Hill’ and was used for vegetable gardens and small farms. The area was well known for it’s fertile land and for having the look and feel of a traditional English village.
Arncliffe is located close to the Sydney airport, and borders a significant area of remnant bushland, the Wolli Creek Valley. Arncliffe is primary a residential area with mostly low to medium density residential housing. The suburb’s main shopping district is centred around Belmore and Firth Streets, alongside the Arncliffe railway station and extending along Forest Road.
