About Petersham Sydney 2049
Petersham is located in the Inner West region of Sydney; it is situated 6 km south-west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. Petersham is located in the Grayndler state electorate and has a population of 7,529 people. The suburbs surrounding Petersham are: Leichhardt, Annandale, Lewisham, Stanmore, Dulwich Hill, Marrickville and Enmore.
Petersham was the site of a wartime plane crash in 1945, when a plane flying above the suburb suffered structural failure after a power dive and disintegrated in mid-air. There was significant damage to the suburb from the falling debris with five houses being set alight. The two crew members died because they were too low for their parachutes to open, but there were no civilian deaths.
These days, Petersham is a quiet suburb with lots of terrace houses and a distinct Portuguese flavour. The suburb has a high number of Southern European residents and the commercial area, which runs down New Canterbury Road, is home to many Portuguese restaurants famous for their flame-grilled chicken.
