Ashfield is located in the Inner West region of Sydney; it is situated 9 km west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales, Australia. Ashfield is located in the Strathfield and Canterbury state electorates and has a population of 22,000 people. The suburbs surrounding Ashfield are: Croydon, Five Dock, Haberfield, Summer Hill, Dulwich Hill, Hurlstone Park, Ashbury and Croydon Park.
Prior to white settlement the Ashfield area was inhabited by the Wangal Indigenous people. After colonisation the area was settled by Robert Campbell who named the suburb in honour of his father who was the Laird of Ashfield in Scotland.
Today, Ashfield has one of the highest urban densities in Australia and has a strong multicultural profile with excellent ethnic diversity.
