About Lillyfield Sydney 2040
Lilyfield is located in the Inner West region of Sydney; it is situated 6 km west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales, Australia. Lilyfield is located in the Balmain state electorate and has a population of 6,946 people. The suburbs surrounding Lilyfield are: Rodd Point, Drummoyne, Rozelle, Haberfield, Glebe, Annandale, Leichhardt and Forest Lodge.
A small suburb, it was originally considered a working class area, but today, because of its proximity to the Sydney CBD, Lilyfield is becoming increasingly gentrified. Lilyfield was originally part of Leichhardt but became an independent suburb in the late 1800s.
The most notable landmark in the suburb is the former Callan Park Hospital. A psychiatric hospital, designed by Government architect James Barnet and built in 1884. The hospital was designed utilising the principles of American psychiatrist Dr Kirkbride and was called ‘Callan Park Hospital for the Insane’. These days, the complex is home to the Sydney College of the Arts and the main part of the building is listed in the Register of the National Estate.
Nearest Post Office: 51/55 Norton St, Leichhardt, NSW, 2040.
