Annandale is located in the Inner West region of Sydney; it is situated 5 km west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales, Australia. Annandale is located in the Balmain state electorate and has a population of 8,669 people. The suburbs surrounding Balmain are: Lilyfield, Rozelle, Glebe, Camperdown, Stanmore, Petersham and Leichhardt.
The suburb of Annadale was founded by Major George Johnston who captained one of the ships of the First Fleet. He settled in the area with his wife, one of the convicts on his ship, and originally called the area Johnston’s Bush, before renaming it Annandale after Annan, the town where he was born in Scotland. Many places in the suburb are named after him including Johnstons Bay, Johnstons Creek, Johnstons Street and Johnstons Lane.
Annandale has many heritage listed buildings and is a popular driving tour destination for those interested in Historical buildings and Architecture. The most popular of the heritage listed buildings in Annandale is called ‘The Abbey’. An “imaginative and romantic” house modeled on a Scottish Manor, The Abbey architecture includes a Gothic vault, hand-painted panels, incorporated stencil work, timber architraves and even a tower with gargoyles.
