Situated on the northern banks of the Cooks River, Marrickville was named after the late Thomas Chalder’s “Marrick” estate, which was named for his hometown in North Yorkshire, England. Prior to white settlement the area was inhabited by an Indigenous group called the Cadigal people who, according to artefacts found in the area lived in the Marrickville region for over 7000 years.
In more recent years, Marrickville has seen an influx of artists, musicians and young professionals giving the suburb a bohemian feel.
