Summer Hill is located in the Inner West region of Sydney; it is situated 8 km west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. Summer Hill is located in the Grayndler state electorate and has a population of 6,130 people. The suburbs surrounding Summer Hill are: Croydon, Haberfield, Petersham, Ashfield, Lewisham, Ashbury, Hurlstone Park and Dulwich Hill.

Prior to white settlement the Summer Hill area was inhabited by the Cadigal and the Wangal Indigenous people. Today it is a vibrant, multicultural suburb with more than 35% of the population born outside of Australia. Notable residents of Summer Hill include Archibald Prize winner Normand Henry Baker, All Saints actress Virginia Gay and former NSW Supreme Court judge Justice Greg James.

In response to the removal of a gay pride rainbow crossing in Oxford St, Summer Hill residents chalked a rainbow in the Summer Hill public square. The rainbow was removed on two occasions by council workers and re-chalked by residents after each removal. The third pride rainbow was not removed, and remains in the square to this day.
