Homebush is located in the Inner West region of Sydney; it is situated 15 km west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales, Australia. Homebush is located in the Strathfield and Drummoyne state electorates and has a population of 6,195 people. The suburbs surrounding Homebush are: Flemington, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, and Homebush West.
Established in the 1800s by famous surgeon D’Arcy Wentworth, there is some contention as to the origin of its name. Some believe the suburb was named after a place in Kent in England, while others maintain that the suburb was so named because drovers would camp in the heavily bushed area while traveling to and from Sydney’s main sale yards which were located in the area that is now known as Flemington Markets. The area was used as a temporary ‘home’ in the bush and so – apparently – the name was born.
