Windsor is located in the North Western region of Sydney; it is situated 56 km north west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. Windsor is located in the Hawkesbury state electorate and has a population of 1,670 people. The suburbs surrounding Windsor are: Cornwallis, Freemans Reach, Pitt Town, Wilberforce, Clarendon, South Windsor, Mulgrave and McGraths Hill.
Windor is the location of the third area of British settlement in Australia, making it Australia’s 3rd oldest suburb. The first settlement in Windsor was established in 1791 in order to take advantage of the fertile area surrounding the Hawkesbury River for agriculture.
The suburb was originally called ‘Green Hills’ but the name was later changed to Windsor after the town in England. The suburb has a significant collection of Historical buildings including some of the oldest surviving buildings in the entire country, many of which are Heritage listed on the Register for the National Estate. Including: St Matthew’s Anglican Church (1817), Macquarie Arms Hotel (1815), Claremont Cottage (1822), the Court House (1821).
