Werrington is located in the Western Suburbs of Sydney; it is situated 49 km west of the Sydney CBD, in New South Wales, Australia. Werrington is located in the Londonderry state electorate and has a population of 3,528 people. The suburbs surrounding Werrington are: Cambridge Park, Werrington County, Kingswood, St Marys and Claremont Meadows.
Prior to white settlement, the Werrington area was inhabited by the Gomerrigal-Tongarra Indigenous people who spoke the Darug language and lived in bark huts called gunyahs. The Gomerrigal-Tongarra people were semi-nomadic and lived a hunter gatherer lifestyle which consisted of hunting kangaroos and emus for their meat and gathering berries, yams and other native plants.
After colonisation, the area was granted to Mary King, the youngest daughter of the Governor Phillip Gidley King for whom the suburb Kingswood was named. One of the few female recipients of land, Mary King was not permitted to take possession of the property until after she was married, because in the 1800s single women were not permitted to own property. Mary and her husband built a house on the land, named Werrington, which is still standing and is Heritage listed on the Register of the National Estate.
