Whalan is located in the Western Suburbs of Sydney; it is situated 44 km west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales, Australia. Whalan is located in the Londonderry state electorate and has a population of 3,592 people. The suburbs surrounding Whalan are: Tregear, Lethbridge Park, Emerton, Dharruk, Mount Druitt, Oxley Park and St Marys.
The suburb was named for James Whalan, an explorer who was granted 300 acres of land in the area by Governor Ralph Darling in the early 1830s. James Whalan is known for his exploration of the Blue Mountains area, including the magnificent Jenolan caves, an area which is still popular with tourists today. James Whalan was also responsible for discovering the rock formation known as Grand Arch while in pursuit of a bushranger by the name of McKeown.
Whalan has a popular reserve which has numerous parks, a go-cart track, four soccer fields and four football fields. The reserve is a memorial park dedicated to the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) camp which was on the site during WWII.
