Officially declared a suburb in 1987, Glendenning was named after Plumpton butcher William Glendenning who owned a slaughter yard in the area in the early 1900s.
Glendenning is home to the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga which is located on the corner of Glendenning Road and Lamb Street. The church was officially opened in October 2008 by the visiting King of Tonga, George Tupou V.
