About Greystanes Sydney 2145
Greystanes is located in the Western Suburbs region of Sydney; it is situated 29 km west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales, Australia. Greystanes is located in the Parramatta state electorate and has a population of 21,703 people. The suburbs surrounding Greystanes are Girraween, Pendle Hill, South Wentworthville, Merrylands West, Woodpark, Smithfield, Wetherill Park, Prospect and Pemulwuy.
During the early years of colonisation, the Greystanes area was known as Prospect Hill and was the location of the very first land grants to the convicts who were emancipated in 1791. As a result, the area was home to much conflict between the emancipated convicts and the traditional land owners, the Darug people.
Eventually the area now known as prospect was broken into various different suburbs and the name Greystanes was given to the area. The suburb was named by Nelson Lawson for the colour of the grey stones on the outcrops of balsalt on Prospect Hill. ‘Stanes’ being the Scottish word for stones.
Today, Greystanes has a large Maltese-Australian community and hosts a popular festival each October called Festa tal-Vitorja. The festival has its origins in the religious festivals held each year in Malta which celebrate the patron saint of the village.
