Penshurst is located in the southern suburbs of Sydney; it is situated 17 km south of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. Penshurst is located in the Oatley state electorate and has a population of 4,539 people. The suburbs surrounding Penshurst are: Mortdale, Beverly Hills, Hurstville, Hurstville Grove and Oatley.
Named for the town of Penshurst in Kent, England, the suburb was particularly popular for farming and timber cutting. In 1890 the railway station opened and the suburb slowly grew as a residential area.
These days, Penshurst features primarily low and medium density residential housing with the population primarily older couples. There is also a younger generation of ethnic families who are attracted to the suburb because of its close proximity to Hurstville.
Penshurst has a shopping centre located on Penshurst Street near the Penshurst railway station. There are also a number of commercial developments along King Georges road and Forest Road.
