About Miranda Sydney 2000
Miranda is located in the southern suburbs of Sydney; it is situated 24 km south of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. Miranda is located in the Miranda state electorate and has a population of 12,903 people. The suburbs surrounding Miranda are: Sylvania, Sylvania Waters, Gymea, Caringbah, Gymea Bay and Yowie Bay.
After the settlers came, the Miranda area was owned by Thomas Holt, whose land stretched from Sutherland all the way through to Cronulla. The manager of the Holt Estate – James Murphy – named the area ‘Miranda’ after the character in The Tempest, a play by William Shakespeare.
In the 1920’s a steam train ran between Sutherland and Cronulla, via Miranda. At that time the suburb had a total of 5 shops. These days Miranda is known for being a shopping destination. At one time the Westfield Miranda complex was notable for being the largest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere.
