Heathcote is located in the southern suburbs of Sydney; it is situated 36 km south of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. Originally known as ‘Bottle Forest’, Heathcote wasn’t formally named until 1835 when Sir Thomas Mitchell named it in honour of an officer who fought beside him during the Peninsula wars.
These days, the suburb of Heathcote is divided into 2 distinct sections with Heathcote east on the eastern side of the train station and Heathcote west to the west. Heathcote west, houses the majority of residents, while the Heathcote east hosts 2 of the district’s schools and a popular sports oval.
Heathcote is best known for the many walking tracks in Heathcote National Park, including the Heathcote to Waterfall bush walk which has been a popular walk since the 1930s.
