Gymea is located in the southern suburbs of Sydney; it is situated 26 km south of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. Gymea is located in the Miranda state electorate and has a population of 7,175 people. The suburbs surrounding Gymea are: Sutherland, Kareela, Sylvania, Kirrawee, Miranda, Grays Point, Gymea Bay and Yowie Bay.
The suburb of Gymea was named for the Gymea lily (doyanthes excelsa), a perennial plant that grows up to 6m tall. The lily was named by the local indigenous people of the Eora tribe. Although many of the lilies have been eradicated by local developments, they can still be found in the Royal National Park.
Primarily a low density residential suburb, the majority of housing in Gymea is located around the railway station. In recent years Gymea has become popular for its “cafe culture” particularly along Gymea Bay Road which is home to many restaurants, cafes, boutiques and gourmet food establishments.
