About Mortdale Sydney 2223
Mortdale is located in the southern suburbs of Sydney; it is situated 17 km south of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. Mortdale is located in the Oatley state electorate and has a population of 3,025 people. The suburbs surrounding Mortdale are: Peakhurst, Beverly Hills, Peakhurst Heights, Oatley and Hurstville Grove.
Previously known by a number of names such as: Mort’s Road, Mort’s Crossing, Mort’s Hill, Mort’s Dale and Mort’s Township, the suburb was named after Thomas Sutcliffe Mort a Sydney Industrialist who died in 1878 at the age of 62.
The Mortdale area was originally a farming community. Later, the Hurstville Steam Brick Company – more recently known as Judd’s Brickworks – was established, and the area was subdivided for housing. Following the First World War, Mortdale became a popular suburb for returning soldiers looking for housing.
These days, Mortdale consists primarily of residential homes. Notable residents of the suburb include: physicist and astronomer Ruby Violet Payne Scott, and Rugby League footballers Billy Smith, Mark Gasnier and Reg Gasnier.
