Blakehurst is located in the Rockdale state electorate and has a population of 6,102 people. The suburbs surrounding Blakehurst are: South Hurstville, Carlton, Kogarah Bay, Connells Point, Blakehurst, Carss Park, Kyle Bay, Sylvania and Sans Souci.
The suburb of Blakehurst was named for William Blake, who in 1893 was the Cooks River road assessor and postmaster. Blakehurst is bordered Kyle Bay, the suburb of Sylvania, Tom Uglys Bridge and Tom Uglys Point. Tom Uglys Point was named for an Aboriginal man nicknamed ‘Tom Ugly’ who died in the area after a diving accident. Tom Uglys Point is home to many popular fishing spots as well as a number of seafood restaurants and take away shops.
The suburb is primarily residential, with a large percentage of the population born overseas.
