The suburb was named for the Waverton Estate in 1929, the home of an early resident of the area, Robert Old which was named by William Carr after a village in England. The suburb is known best for its bushland peninsula, Balls Head Reserve, which is a popular spot with picnickers, and is one of the best spots to watch the Harbour fireworks on New Years Eve. The suburb is also home to Waverton Park which is on the banks of Berry’s Bay and has stunning views of the Sydney Harbour.
