Lavender bay, known for its spectacular Harbour Bridge views, was named after George Lavender, senior crew member of the prison hulk Phoenix which was moored in the area for many years. Before the suburb was officially named, it was often referred to by the colonists as Hulk Bay or Phoenix Bay.
The suburb has been home to many notable residents including Sir Donald Bradman, colloqually referred to as “The Don”. Bradman was an Australian Cricketer and is widely acknowledged as the greatest batsman of all time. Also hailing from Lavendar Bay was Australian artist, sculptor and writer Norman Lindsay, best known for his children’s classic “The Magic Pudding”.
