East Ryde is located in the Northern Suburbs region of Sydney; it is situated 12 kms north west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales, Australia. East Ryde is in the Lane Cove state electorate and has a population of 2,337 people. The suburbs surrounding East Ryde are: Ryde, North Ryde, Lane Cove West, Gladesville and Hunters Hill.
East Ryde is a small suburb surrounded by native bushland and water views. A large part of the suburb is located on the top of a dramatic ridge known as the Dress Circle Estate. The area was originally a very dense turpentine-ironbark forest, before being used as a council waste dump. In 1956 the area was cleared, leveled and marked for development.
One unique feature of East Ryde is that many of its street names are named after Australian stars of the screen and stage. Some of the stars that are commemorated include: Opera singers Ronald Dowd, June Bronhill and Dame Nellie Melba; Actors Diane Cilento, Cecil Kellaway, Peter Finch, Madge Elliot, John McCallum and Michael Pate; Comedians Kitty Bluett, Gladys Moncrieff and Roy Rene as well as Prima Ballerina Peggy Sager.
East Ryde is part of The Great North Walk, a walking track that runs between Sydney and Newcastle, is 250 kms long and runs through much of the states most beautiful areas. The East Ryde section of the walk runs through the mangrove communities at Kittys Creek and Buffalo Creek and boardwalks have been built to allow walkers easy access through the mangroves.
