McMahons Point is a harbour side suburb located in the Lower North Shore region of Sydney; it is situated 3 kms north of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales, Australia. McMahons Point is located in the North Shore state electorate and has a population of 2,344 people. The suburbs surrounding McMahons Point are: Waverton, North Sydney, Lavender Bay, Greenwich, Milsons Point, Goat Island, Millers Point and Dawes Point.
The suburb was named for Irish Manufacturer Maurice McMahon, who in 1864, build his home on the headland. He manufactured combs and brushes, and later became mayor of North Sydney in 1890. Prior to white settlement, the area was inhabited by the Cammeraygal indigenous people who lived in local bushland and along the foreshore before the land was ‘colonised’. After colonisation the land was granted to James Milson, a Napoleonic War Veteran and farmer, and Billy Blue, a Jamaican Convict.
