The suburb of Matraville was named after the American sailor and diplomat James Matra who worked as a midshipman with Captain James Cook on the first landing in Botany Bay in 1770. In 1783 it was James Matra who first proposed to the British Government that they establish a colony in Botany Bay.
Primarily a residential area, Matraville is known for its low-rise housing and private dwellings, but has a good mix of commercial, retail and recreational areas as well. The main shopping district is located on Bunnerong Road.
