About Kensington Sydney 2033
Kensington is located in the south eastern region of Sydney; it is situated 4 km south of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. Kensington is located in the Heffron and Coogee state electorates and has a population of 10,849 people. The suburbs surrounding Kensington are: Waterloo, Moore Park, Centennial Park, Randwick, Zetland, Rosebery, Eastlakes and Kingsford.
Kensington, colloquially known as “Kenso”, is most well known for housing the main campus of the University of New South Wales, and in particular the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). Popular for its proximity to the Sydney CBD, Kensington is primarily a residential suburb with a mixture of high density housing and free standing homes.
Prior to white settlement the Kensington area was home to the Cadigal Indigenous people of the Darug language group, who were known for their fishing skills and tree-bark canoes. While there are few Indigenous people living in the area now, the 1828 census recorded more than 50 clans of Cadigal people living in the suburb.
These days Kensington is heavily influenced by the University. Its shopping area is located along Anzac Parade, which is the main thoroughfare of Kensington. There is no train or light rail service in Kensington, but there are many buses that service the suburb and the University.
