About Riverstone Sydney 2765
Riverstone is located in the Hills District region of Sydney; it is situated 48 kms north west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales, Australia. Riverstone is located in the Riverstone state electorate and has a population of 6,191 people. The suburbs surrounding Riverstone are: South Windsor, Windsor Downs, Vineyard, Box Hill, Rouse Hill, Kellyville Ridge, Schofields, and Marsden Park.
Prior to white settlement, the area was inhabited by the Darug tribe of Indigenous Australians. On the arrival of the first fleet, much of the Darug population were wiped out by disease. The remainder of the tribe were relocated to Government farms to allow the area to be settled by colonists hoping to farm the region. The area turned out to be unsuitable for colonial farming practices and despite the Darug tribe having lived off the land successfully for many years, the colonists barely survived, spending a number of years in ‘near-famine’ conditions, eventually relocating food production inland.
The suburb was originally named Riverston after Riverston Farm, owned by Lieutenant Colonel Maurice Charles O’Connell. The ‘e’ at the end of the Suburb name first appeared in a misprinted railway timetable in 1860 and became accepted as the correct spelling.
In 1988, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of European settlement in Australia, a heritage museum was erected in the Masonic Hall, where it remains today.
