About Greenwich Sydney 2065

Greenwich is located in the Lower North Shore region of Sydney; it is situated 7 kms north west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales, Australia. Greenwich is located in the Lane Cove state electorate and has a population of 5,178 people. The suburbs surrounding Greenwich are: Lane Cove, Artarmon, St Leonards, Wollstonecraft, Waverton, Birchgrove, Woolwich, Northwood and Longueville.

The name of the suburb is pronounced GREN-itch and is named after an area in England which is on the banks on the Thames in London. Parramatta River is often colloquially referred to as the Thames of the Antipodes and as such, many other nearby locations were also named after Thames localities including Henley, Woolwich and Putney.

Prior to white settlement, the Greenwich area was inhabited by the Cammeraygal clan of the Guringai tribe, who hunted in the hinterland and lived along the foreshores of the harbour. The indigenous communities were still present in the 1820s though many had died from introduced diseases, by the 1986 disease and displacement had driven them out completely.

Today, Greenwich is a financially well off suburb with the median household income almost double the national average.
