About Putney Sydney 2112

Putney is located in the Lower North Shore region of Sydney; it is situated 10 kms north west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales, Australia. Putney is located in the Lane Cove state electorate and has a population of 3,192 people. The suburbs surrounding Putney are: Ryde, West Ryde, Gladesville, Meadowbank, Tennyson Point, Breakfast Point, Mortlake and Rhodes.

Prior to white settlement, the Putney area was inhabited by the Walumedegal indigenous people and evidence of their inhabitance remains around Glades Bay and Morrisons Bay, including an open rock engraving site, an axe grinding site and a sheltered stencil art site. After colonisation the area was known as Easter Farms and was one of the first areas of British settlement. One of the earliest settlers of the region was now famous brewer James Squire who settled in 1792 and established a brewery near what is now known as Kissing Point.

The suburb name ‘Putney’ is derived from Putney on the Thames River in London. Many other nearby locations were also named after Thames localities including Henley, Woolwich and Greenwich.

Morrison Bay, one of the most notable locations in Putney was named after soldier Archibald Morrison who was granted 55 acres of Putney land in 1795.

Nearest Post Office: 219-221 Morrison Road, Putney, NSW, 2112.
