Wareemba is located in the Inner West region of Sydney; it is situated 12 km west of the Sydney CBD in New South Wales Australia. Wareemba is located in the Drummoyne state electorate and has a population of 1,390 people. The suburbs surrounding Wareemba are: Abbotsford, Chiswick, Russell Lea, Five Dock and Concord.
European settlement in the Wareemba area began in the 1830s, some 40 odd years after the first fleet’s arrival in Sydney. The suburb was originally part of the neighbouring Abbotsford, gaining independence in 1993. The name Wareemba comes from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘place where salt water meets sweet water’.
Wareemba is a small and quiet suburb, it is largely residential with a small group of shops located on the Great North Road. The suburb has a reputation for serving excellent coffee. According to the 2006 census Wareema, along with neighbouring Five Dock and Haberfield, has a significant population of residents of Italian heritage.
