Prior to Colonisation the area was inhabited by the Cadigal Aboriginal people.

Dulwich Hill has a strong multicultural profile thanks to the Greek and Portuguese communities which built up the suburb during the 1950s and 1960s and later, the significant contribution of the large Vietnamese population that migrated to the area after the Vietnam War.
