About Botany Sydney 2019

Botany is located in the south eastern region of Sydney; it is situated 7 km south of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. Botany is located in the Heffron state electorate and has a population of 8,884 people. The suburbs surrounding Botany are: Mascot, Pagewood, and Banksmeadow.

Botany Bay, is the site of Captain James Cook’s first landing in Australia on April 29, 1770. Aboard was English Botanist Joseph Banks who spent many days on the shore collecting a number of never-before-seen botanical specimens. Thanks to Joseph Banks, the suburb was originally known as ‘Botanist Bay’ but later changed its name. The suburb is also home to the Sir Joseph Banks Hotel, which is listed on the Register of the National Estate.

The suburb was originally intended as an agricultural district, but quickly became an industrial hub with slaughter works, mills and fell mongers yards. Today, Botany is Sydney’s largest port and has extensive development centred around freight and shipping. Its proximity to both the CBD and Sydney’s beaches makes it a favourable suburb for residential development and each year it sees an increase in urbanisation for that reason.

Nearest Post Office: 2 Banksia Street, Botany, NSW 2019.
