The suburb of Punchbowl was named for the circular valley known as 'the punch bowl' in the nearby suburb of Belfield. During the 1920s and 30s the suburb was a renowned suburb of the arts with a high-class reputation. The suburb housed many popular theatres including the famous Punchbowl Astoria and The Regent. Both popular theatres closed down in 1959 and later became offices and retail outlets.
