About Canterbury Sydney 2193

Canterbury is located in the inner south-west region of Sydney; it is situated 11 km south west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales Australia. Canterbury is located in the Canterbury state electorate and has a population of 6,159 people. The suburbs surrounding Canterbury are: Campsie, Ashbury, Ashfield, Hurlstone Park, Clemton Park and Earlwood.

After white settlement, the land in what is now known as Canterbury was granted to Reverend Richard Johnson, who was the Chaplain of the first fleet. He named the area Canterbury Vale. The suburb started out as an industrial area with the Australian Sugar Company building it’s factories there in 1841.

During the 1920’s a tram line ran through the suburb of Canterbury, with services to the City and Balmain. These days Canterbury Road is one of Sydney’s major arterial routes and the Canterbury railway station is a major terminus for both Sydney’s train and Sydney bus networks.

A major site in Canterbury is the Cook’s River. The river has 2 dedicated footbridges for cyclists and pedestrians and along the banks of the river there is extensive parkland. Tasker Park, for example, has many playing fields, and ice rink and a swimming pool, and is connected to the northern bank of the Cook’s river by a footbridge.

Notable residents of Canterbury include: Footballer Robbie Farah, artist Vali Myers, and cricketer Steve Waugh.
