About Camden Sydney 2570

Camden is located in the western suburbs of Sydney; it is situated 65 km south west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales Australia. Camden is located in the Camden state electorate and has a population of 3,244 people. The suburbs surrounding Camden are: Ellis Lane, Cobbitty, Kirkham, Grasmere, Elderslie, Cawdor, Camden South and Spring Farm.

Located in the Macarthur region of Sydney, Camden is an historic town and the administrative centre for the Camden Council. The suburb lies on the fringe of Sydney's metropolitan sprawl and Campbelltown serves as it's business hub.

The Camden region was originally inhabited by the Gandangara Indigneous people who called the area "Benkennie" meaning 'dry land'. The Gandangara people lived in family groups of between 20-40 members and survived by hunting kangaroos, eels and possums and eating seasonal fruit and vegetables in the area.

The suburb was named Camden after Lord Camden who had promised land in the area to settler John Macarthur.

These days Camden is home to the research facilities for the agricultural and veterinary schools of the University of Sydney and the suburb is popular for the Camden Show, a yearly event which combines state fair elements with many amusement park rides and games.

Notable residents of Camden include: Drummer Rob Hirst, Olympian Steven Bradbury, motorcyclist Mat Mladin and inventor of the Bionic Ear Professor Graeme Clark.

Nearest Post Office: 135 Argyle St, Camden, NSW, 2570.
