How to Make the Most of Your Microwave

Posted: Friday, September 16, 2016

These days it’s unusual to find an Aussie kitchen without a microwave, and like people all over the world, Australians are busy. We put convenience at a premium and for most of us that translates to faster meal prep at the end of the day. But if you’re like most Aussies you’re probably not using your microwave to its full potential, and we’re here to tell you that your humble microwave can do SO much more than just reheat your leftovers or zap those frozen meals.

Getting to Know Your Microwave

Traditional Microwaves:
Traditional microwaves use radio-frequency energy to heat the water and fats inside the food you’re heating and can be either built-in or freestanding.

Convection Microwaves:
Convection microwaves on the other hand, use hot air circulated by a fan to heat your food like a regular oven - only faster. The LG MC9280XC1 convection microwave even comes with a ‘crispy reheat’ option that we love - no more soggy leftovers!

Grill Microwaves:
You’ve most likely been told never to put metal inside your microwave, but if you’ve got a grill microwave - like the Westinghouse WMG281SB or WMG281SF - you can throw that rule out the window. Grill microwaves come with metal accessories in the box and can be used to brown meats just like a regular grill.

Flatbed Microwaves:
Flatbed microwaves - like the Smeg SBIM30X - don’t come with a traditional turntable like you’re used to, instead they incorporate a ceramic base for ultra efficient cooking.

Servicing Your Microwave
No matter which type of microwave you have in your kitchen, it will need to be serviced regularly to keep it functioning well.
